An original academic drawing dated 1er Juin 1850, depicting Bacchus (Dionysus), the classical god of wine, accompanied by a playful satyr. The figure of Bacchus is rendered in a confident contrapposto, crowned with vine leaves and raising a drinking bowl, while a youthful satyr crouches at his side, holding grapes.
Executed in pencil with strong tonal shading, this drawing demonstrates the disciplined training of the École des Beaux-Arts tradition, where students honed their skill by reproducing antique statuary. The careful rendering of anatomy, drapery, and expression reflects the influence of Greco-Roman sculpture and the 19th-century fascination with antiquity.
Inscribed on the verso in period ink: “No. 50–5 – 1er Juin 1850”, recording the precise date of execution. A faint signature is also visible on the front.
