An elegant early 19th-century copperplate engraving of Alcibiades, the brilliant and controversial Athenian general, orator, and political figure during the Peloponnesian War. Published in London on November 1st, 1806 by J. Wilkes and engraved by J. Chapman, this portrait exemplifies the neoclassical ideal of heroic beauty and classical virtue.
Alcibiades is shown in profile, crowned with a laurel wreath, clad in classical armor and a richly detailed cloak. Beneath the portrait is a charming vignette of mythological children—perhaps referencing Alcibiades’ famed youthful charisma and his close ties to both Athenian aristocracy and philosophical circles like that of Socrates.
Celebrated for his strategic genius and reviled for his political maneuverings, Alcibiades remains one of the most intriguing figures in Ancient Greek history.
