A finely detailed early 19th-century copperplate engraving of Andrew Marvell (1621–1678), the celebrated English metaphysical poet, political thinker, and satirist. Published in London in 1806 by J. Wilkes and engraved by J. Chapman, this portrait features Marvell in formal mid-17th century attire, with an introspective and intellectual expression fitting his literary reputation.
Beneath the portrait is an allegorical vignette showing two classical female figures in a scholarly or poetic setting—perhaps alluding to The Garden or Marvell’s fusion of public life and pastoral reflection.
Marvell is best known for works like To His Coy Mistress, and for his service as both a Parliamentarian and defender of liberty in the wake of the English Civil War.
