A distinguished copperplate engraving of Demosthenes, the renowned Athenian statesman and one of the greatest orators of antiquity. Published in London on May 1st, 1806 by J. Wilkes, and engraved by J. Chapman, this portrait exemplifies the neoclassical admiration for intellect, rhetoric, and civic duty.
Demosthenes is depicted in profile with a fur-lined robe, his expression intense and focused—reflecting his legendary commitment to public speaking and opposition to Macedonian dominance. Below the portrait is a dramatic vignette, possibly referencing his tragic end by suicide to avoid capture by Antipater’s men after the fall of Greek independence.
A brilliant mind, Demosthenes is remembered for his Philippics and powerful speeches defending Athenian democracy and liberty.
