An exceptional early 19th-century copperplate engraving of Frederick Barbarossa, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, published in London on December 10th, 1807 by J. Wilkes. Engraved by J. Chapman, this portrait captures the legendary 12th-century monarch, known for his military prowess, participation in the Crusades, and efforts to consolidate imperial authority in Germany and Italy.
Barbarossa is shown in regal attire, crowned and adorned in richly patterned armor. Beneath the oval portrait is a detailed vignette depicting a classical imperial court or council scene—perhaps alluding to Frederick’s efforts to strengthen imperial institutions and the rule of law.
