A stately neoclassical copperplate engraving of Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke (1690–1764), who served as Lord Chancellor of Great Britain from 1737 to 1756. Published in London on April 28th, 1807 by J. Wilkes and engraved by J. Chapman, this portrait captures the elegance and legal authority of one of the longest-serving Lord Chancellors in British history.
Hardwicke is depicted in full judicial wig and robes, his expression dignified and assured. The cartouche beneath the portrait shows a full-length image of him in ceremonial dress, standing beside a classical pillar and holding a legal scroll—symbolizing his contributions to British law and governance.
He was noted for his legal reforms and for consolidating the authority of equity law through decisions made in the Court of Chancery.
