A dignified and detailed copperplate engraving of Sir Matthew Hale (1609–1676), one of the most respected jurists in English legal history. This portrait, engraved by J. Chapman and published in London on September 1st, 1807 by J. Wilkes, depicts Hale in formal judicial robes and cap, exuding wisdom and solemnity.
Hale served as Lord Chief Justice under Charles II and was admired for his legal integrity, piety, and scholarly works—including The History of the Common Law of England. Beneath the portrait is a symbolic cartouche featuring a heart supported by a sword and scales, representing the balance of justice and moral conscience.
