Original 1814 hand-colored engraving of Philip James de Loutherbourg (1740–1812), the acclaimed landscape painter, theatrical designer, and multimedia innovator. Born in France and active in England, Loutherbourg made significant contributions to Romantic landscape painting and revolutionized 18th-century stagecraft with his work at Drury Lane and invention of the Eidophusikon.
This striking portrait, engraved after the original painting by M. A. Shee, was published by G. Jones and includes a symbolic vignette of a painter’s palette and brushes.
