Antique 1823 Engraving of Rev. William Mason – Poet & Biographer of Thomas Gray

Original 1823 stipple engraving of Rev. William Mason (1724–1797), the English poet, Anglican cleric, and esteemed biographer of Thomas Gray. Mason was also Chaplain to King George III and left a quiet but lasting mark on English literature and garden design.
This elegant portrait, engraved by R. Page for the Encyclopaedia Londinensis, includes a classical vignette below the portrait showing a figure mourning over a sculptural bust — a poignant nod to Mason’s role in preserving memory through poetry.
