Original 1827 hand-colored stipple engraving of Charles John I (1763–1844), King of Sweden and Norway, engraved for the Encyclopaedia Londinensis. Born Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, he rose from soldier in Revolutionary France to Marshal of France under Napoleon — and was later elected heir to the Swedish throne.
