Description:
A rare and superbly rendered academic life drawing by A.M. Philips, completed at the Lambeth School of Art in April 1875. This large-format study depicts a full-length standing male nude, drawn in pencil and charcoal with meticulous anatomical precision and classical proportions. The figure’s pose, with one hand clenched and the other relaxed, reflects both strength and serenity — hallmarks of the Beaux-Arts academic style.
Executed during Philips’ time as a student, this work is fully authenticated by the original Lambeth School label affixed lower right. It records the artist’s name, age (26), occupation (Painter), date (1875), and stage classification. The form is signed by master , Victorian art education and later principal of the Royal College of Art.
The paper bears an embossed E.S.K. watermark, a mark linked to South Kensington educational suppliers, confirming the use of official academic materials used across major British art institutions in the 19th century.
