Description:

A striking 17th century Baroque engraving depicting the tragic figure of Flavius Julius Crispus, son of Constantine the Great, shown resisting Fausta in a dramatic scene of innocence and temptation. The Latin inscription beneath reads: “Crispo Innocentia magno stetit, Sed illa pretio quolibet constat bene” (“Crispus stood firm in innocence, though at great cost — yet innocence is worth any price”).


Artists: The work is an engraving by François Spierre, created after a painting by Pietro da Cortona.

Date: It dates to approximately 1677.
