An original hand-coloured engraving of Andrew Marvell (1621–1678), one of England’s most celebrated metaphysical poets and political satirists. Known for masterpieces like To His Coy Mistress, Marvell was also a Member of Parliament and an eloquent defender of civil liberties during the turbulent years following the English Civil War.
This elegant portrait, published in 1815 for the Encyclopaedia Londinensis, shows Marvell with distinctive 17th-century attire and flowing curls. Below the portrait is a finely detailed vignette scene, likely alluding to his literary or political life, adding unique visual context.
