Exceptional antique hand-coloured engraving of Granville Sharp (1735–1813), a pioneering British abolitionist, legal scholar, and social reformer. Sharp played a foundational role in the movement to end slavery in Britain, notably through the famous Somersett Case of 1772, which declared slavery illegal on English soil. He was also one of the founding members of the Sierra Leone colony for freed slaves.
Engraved for the Encyclopaedia Londinensis in 1827, this noble profile portrait shows Sharp in a dignified pose, wearing a high-collared coat and cravat, evoking his moral conviction and clarity of purpose.
