Antique Engraving Jean-Baptiste Massillon, Great French Preacher & Bishop 1825

Striking antique engraving of Jean-Baptiste Massillon (1663–1742), the renowned Bishop of Clermont and one of the greatest orators of 18th-century France. Celebrated for his eloquent sermons and moral philosophy, Massillon was chosen to preach the funeral oration for King Louis XIV, famously beginning with: “Dieu seul est grand” (“Only God is great”).
Engraved by E. Page for the Encyclopaedia Londinensis in 1825, this portrait captures the serene and intellectual presence of Massillon in clerical attire. Beneath the image is a finely detailed vignette showing him addressing a large congregation—an evocative tribute to his legacy as a master preacher.
