Striking antique hand-coloured engraving of Jonathan Swift (1667–1745), the celebrated Irish writer, satirist, and political thinker best known for his enduring classic Gulliver’s Travels. As Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin and a fierce critic of political and social injustice, Swift left an indelible mark on Enlightenment thought and English prose.
Engraved by J. Pass for the Encyclopaedia Londinensis in 1822, this portrait captures Swift in clerical robes with a composed yet piercing gaze—befitting the man whose pen was sharper than any sword. The simple composition underscores his role as both a clergyman and a literary provocateur.
