Description:
Finely detailed 17th-century engraving of Maximilian I, Count Palatine of the Rhine and Duke of Bavaria (Serenissimus Maximilianus Comes Palatinus Rheni), dated 1637. Shown in ceremonial armor with a richly embroidered ruff and sash, Maximilian was one of the most powerful Catholic princes of the Holy Roman Empire during the turbulent years of the Thirty Years’ War.
A key figure in the Counter-Reformation, Maximilian I was instrumental in the formation of the Catholic League and played a crucial political and military role during the early 17th century. His title as “Bavariae Dux” (Duke of Bavaria) and his elevated status are inscribed beneath the portrait, emphasizing his high rank and authority.
A sharp, characterful portrait capturing both the grandeur and the intensity of this pivotal European ruler.
Size 12x18 cm
