Description:
A fine 18th century French engraving titled Mercure et Hersé, engraved by François Joullain (1697–1778) after a painting by Paolo Veronese (1528–1588). The original canvas was part of the celebrated collection of the Duke of Orléans, noted in the caption below the image.
The mythological scene shows Mercury, wearing his winged helmet, approaching Hersé in an opulent architectural setting, with classical drapery and statuary enhancing the grandeur of the composition. Joullain’s engraving captures Veronese’s dramatic Venetian style with fine detail and rich tonal depth.
