Antique Engraving of the Farnese Hercules – Classical Sculpture Study – 18th Century Grand Tour Engraving
A magnificent antique engraving of the Farnese Hercules, one of the most celebrated statues of antiquity. The engraving presents the colossal figure of Hercules in two views (front and back), leaning upon his club covered with the Nemean lion’s skin. Below, a classical frieze depicts the Apotheosis of Hercules.
The Farnese Hercules, a Roman marble copy of a lost Greek bronze by Lysippos, was discovered in the Baths of Caracalla and later entered the Farnese collection. Today it is preserved in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples.
This engraving, with inscriptions in both Italian and French, reflects the 18th-century fascination with classical antiquity and was likely produced for collectors and scholars of ancient art during the Grand Tour era.
