An original 17th-century engraving portrait of Maximilian I, Duke of Bavaria (1573–1651), one of the most prominent Catholic leaders during the Thirty Years’ War. He is depicted in elaborate armor, with the Latin inscription identifying him as the Most Serene Count Palatine of the Rhine and Duke of Upper and Lower Bavaria. The engraving bears the motto: “Exurgat Deus et dissipentur inimici eius”, meaning “Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered.” A powerful and richly detailed piece of historical portraiture.
