A beautifully detailed copperplate engraving of Pierre Corneille (1606–1684), one of the greatest French dramatists of the 17th century and a founding figure of classical French tragedy. This portrait was published in London on April 23rd, 1806 by J. Wilkes and engraved by J. Chapman as part of a distinguished series of intellectual and cultural luminaries.
Corneille is shown with long curls, lace collar, and scholarly attire, his gaze direct and self-assured—befitting the author of Le Cid, Horace, and Cinna. Below the portrait is a classical vignette featuring cherubic figures and theatrical masks, symbolizing his enduring contributions to the dramatic arts.
