An antique engraved portrait of Paul Phélypeaux de Pontchartrain (1569–1621), French statesman and Secretary of State under King Louis XIII, shown in an oval frame with inscription and dedicatory verses beneath.
Phélypeaux was one of the most important ministers of early 17th-century France. As Secretary of State for Protestant Affairs, he played a crucial role in negotiating peace and maintaining stability during France’s religious conflicts. He was also a Commander of the Order of the Holy Spirit and a trusted councillor to the King.
The engraving is finely executed, with rich detail in the facial features, lace ruff, and robes of office. Beneath the oval cartouche, inscriptions in French describe his official roles and virtues.
