An antique engraved portrait of William Camden (1551–1623), the distinguished English antiquarian, historian, and herald. Camden was author of the celebrated Britannia (1586), the first comprehensive topographical and historical survey of Great Britain, and he served as Clarenceux King of Arms at the College of Arms in London. Depicted in ornate Elizabethan attire with ruff and chain of office, Camden is framed within a grand oval cartouche surmounted by heraldic shields. Inscribed below: “William Camden Clarenceux, Obiit A.D. 1623 Ætatis suae LXXII”. Engraved by Robert White, noted 17th-century engraver. A fine historical print of a leading figure in English scholarship and heraldry.
