Antique 18th-century engraving of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford (1593–1641), one of the most powerful statesmen of early Stuart England. A close advisor to King Charles I, Wentworth was appointed Lord Deputy of Ireland and later became a leading Royalist figure. He was executed for treason in 1641, a pivotal moment in the lead-up to the English Civil War.
